We would like to ask for your prayers for Malawi.  The country has been marred by countrywide violent demonstrations for and against government this week.  As of today, July 22, about 20 people were confirmed dead, ten of others hospitalized, and hundreds detained or arrested.  The original demonstrations, organized by the civil society groups and supported by
almost all mainline churches and opposition political parties, were planned to be heard on Wednesday, July 20.  However, about two weeks ago, the President announced that he would conduct a ‘Public Lecture’ on some issues being raised by the planned protestors on the same day of planned demonstrations.

Tuesday this week, a youth wing of the ruling party, popularly known as the DPP Cadets (Democratic Progressive Party Cadets) took to the streets of the commercial capital Blantyre in pickup trucks brandishing ‘panga’ knifes and warning anyone who would dare to come into the streets the following morning.  While this was going on, another group calling itself ‘Concerned Citizens’ was also planning a pro-government march on the same day.  Early Wednesday morning, the situation was exacerbated by another
pro-government person who got an injunction from the courts restraining all forms of demonstrations.  Come July 20, the country was in chaos; the President was holding his ‘Public Lecture’ at the State House, thousands of protestors were marching in the street, and some legal minds were in the courts arguing about the merits and demerits of this whole scenario.
The police used live bullets and tear gas to scare people away and this caused looting and retaliation by some of the protestors.  The chaos has continued and several shops and cars have been destroyed.  Offices and property belonging to the ruling party have also been vandalized. Just to update those who are not familiar with the Malawi situation: among other demands, the protestors are demanding that the President should recall the British ambassador (the queen’s diplomat was expelled from Malawi three months ago after he had called the president  ‘becoming a dictator’, in retaliation Malawi’s envoy was expelled from London, and UK has cut all aid which is almost 40% of the national budget and other countries and international agencies are following suit); the government should sort out the scarcity of fuel (Malawi is having fuel shortage and there are always long lines on filling stations waiting to fill up);  the government should sort out the scarcity of Forex (which has crippled businesses across the country as they cannot import raw materials); the government should make sure that there is power all day (the country has no electricity for most part of the day); government should provide drugs in hospitals as most hospitals are almost drugless; and other issues related to governance, corruption of the president and his cohorts, freedom of the press, academic freedom, and unlawful detentions of people with dissenting views. The violence has been happening in cities and towns only, the villages (like Kasupe area) have not been affected.  In response to the protestors’ demands, the President has called for dialogue with the all stakeholders. Our hope and prayer is that the violence will not continue like in other parts of North Africa and the Middle East.

Sta me toe even duidelijk te stellen dat de Malarchi projecten gedragen worden door vele sympathisanten. Dit is een essentiëel gegeven. En laten we eerlijk zijn, zonder jullie was dit niet tot stand gekomen. Daarom wens ik mijn oprechte dank te betuigen aan jullie om het derde Malarchi project voor de lokale organisatie Kasupe Ministries in Malawi te steunen. U droeg bij tot een sociaal-humanitair en architecturaal project dat in authentieke no-nonsens-stijl uw giften verzamelde om er lokaal bouwmateriaal mee te verwerven en stielmannen mee uit te betalen.

Elkeen spande gedurende drie weken de spieren in de loodzware Afrikaanse zon om voor de studenten van het secondair onderwijs een duurzame brug te bouwen, opdat ze niet langer door de modder van een kleine stroom moeten waden om naar school te gaan. Er werd bijna 10m3 beton gemixt en gestort, om een sculptuur te vervaardigen van 14m lang en 2m45 breed. Het team bouwde alles met de hand. Zo werd het gebrek aan elektriciteit en stromend water overwonnen met pure menselijke kracht.

De brug staat op 6 pijlers en biedt een prachtig zicht op de kleine stroom die tijdens het droogseizoen door omwonenden gebruikt wordt voor rijstteelt. Hoewel er slechts 6 maanden in het jaar hoogwater instaat, maakt de bouw van de brug een duidelijk statement: Onderwijs is belangrijk en Kasupe Ministries is bereid om erin te investeren. Naast de studenten opent de brug perspectieven voor de campus om zich verder te ontwikkelen. De school is immers nog jong en zal dit jaar voor het eerst afstuderende scholieren kennen. Hen wacht nu de taak om aan de publieke examens deel te nemen. Zij die slagen, gaan de brug over om het dorp te verlaten en hun leerproces verder te zetten op de publieke universiteiten in de hoofdstad.

De brug zal over een 100tal dagen ingewijd worden als de “Barcelona Bridge”. Het is een herinnering aan ons bezoek en de gesprekken tussen een schrammel kantoortje in Lilongwe en een appartement in Barcelona. Toen we de werken achter ons dienden te laten, om terug aan de slag te gaan bij onze Europese werkgevers, was de brug op een week na voltooid. We hadden reeds 3000 euro gespendeerd en legden er nog eens 200 euro bovenop om meer cement te kopen en het werk te kunnen voltooien. Wanneer de werken beëindigd worden, dient het beton nog 120 dagen uit te harden om haar volledige sterkte te bekomen. Tot dan zal de brug niet gebruikt worden. We hopen dat u al genieten kan van het voorlopig resultaat en het geduld beoefent om over een paar maanden het definitieve resultaat te aanschouwen.

In tussentijd wordt er werk gemaakt van een nieuwe reeks tentoonstellingen waarbij het hele proces in beeld wordt gebracht. De foto’s zullen opnieuw te koop zijn. Er zullen postkaarten gedrukt worden en een catalogus die het verhaal in detail illustreert. Het is de bedoeling om iedereen een beeld te geven van wat er precies aan het gebeuren is en een moment te verschaffen om met fotografe Marieke Selhorst, partner van 2011 Alexander Eschler en oprichter Guust Selhorst te kunnen spreken. Zij die logistieke steun kunnen verschaffen of zelfs een gratis locatie kunnen bemachtigen om de tentoonstellingen in eigen stad te laten organiseren, gelieve ons hiervoor te contacteren. We zijn op zoek naar sponsors om de catalogus, postcards en fotos af te drukken, evenals voor de productie van de fotokaders en ophangsystemen. To the donors and supporters,

I want to make clear that Malarchi is a project carried out by a lot of people, and this fact is essential. Let’s be honest, without you, this would not be realized. Therefore I wish to express my absolute gratitude for supporting the third Malarchi project, a bridge for the secondary school of Kasupe Ministries. You hereby participated in a social humanitarian and architectural project, which collected your donations in order to buy local materials and pay a local workers.

Each one of us rolled up our sleeves during the three weeks and worked in the hot African sun to build for the students of the secondary school a sustainable bridge so that they would not have to walk through the mud to go to school. Almost 10m3 of concrete was mixed and poured to create this sculpture of 14m long and 2m45 wide. The team constructed everything by hand. The lack of electricity and running water was overcome by pure human force.

The bridge stands on 6 (3×2) pillars and offers a marvelous view on the small stream running underneath. Although the level of the water rises during a period of only 6 months, this bridge makes a clear statement: Education is important and clearly we invest in this for all students to get an easy and comfortable access to school in good or bad weather conditions. Not only the students will profit from the new infrastructure. It creates opportunities to develop the campus in the near future. The school is still young, as for the first time students will graduate from the fourth and final year ready to participate in the national exams. If they obtain good results they can get access to the public universities. There is enough potential in the youngsters.

In a little more then 100 days, the bridge will be inaugurated as the “Barcelona Bridge”, as a remembrance to our visit and the conversations between Lilongwe and Barcelona. As we were about to leave the construction site behind, ⅔ of the surface of the bridge was finished. The remaining work was estimated at one more week. 3000 euros was spent and we added 200 euros to buy some more cement in order to finish the bridge. When the works are done, the concrete needs to harden slowly for 120 days before it reaches full strength. So we hope you can enjoy the results as it is now and have the patience to observe the finished bridge in a few months.

In the mean time we are preparing the next series of exhibitions throughout Europe with the pictures of the process. The pictures will be on sale again, postcards will be produced and a catalogue which illustrates the whole story in detail. The intention is to offer everybody a clear image of the issues and create a moment of reflection with the photographer Marieke Selhorst, the partner of 2011, Alexander Eschler and founder of Malarchi, Guust Selhorst. Those who can offer logistic support or can even obtain a location to organize an exhibition, free of charge, please contact us.  We are also looking for sponsors to produce the catalogue, print the pictures, produce the frames and postcards as well as publicity, interviews and so on. ich möchte zunächst verdeutlichen, dass dieses Projekt von sehr vielen Menschen getragen wird. Und das ist essentiell. Ehrliche, ohne euch wäre dies nicht realisiert worden. Hierfür möchte ich mich im höchsten Grad bedanken. Das dritte Malarchi-Projekt, eine Brücke für eine Sekundäre Schule von Kasupe Ministries. Du hast bei einem humanitären und architektonischen Projekt mitgemacht, welches die gesammelten Spenden für örtliche Materialien und den Lohn einheimische Arbeiter bezahlt hat.

Jeder von uns hat die Ärmel hochgekrempelt und drei Wochen in der heißen afrikanischen Sonne gearbeitet, um eine nachhaltige Brücke für die Sekundarschule zu bauen. So müssen die Schüler nicht mehr durch den Schlamm laufen. Es wurden fast 10m³ Beton gerührt und
gegossen, um diese Skulptur von 14m länge und 2.45m breite zu kreieren. Das Team hat alles per Hand konstruiert. Der Mangel an Elektrizität und fließendem Wasser hat gefordert alles mit menschlicher Kraft zu bauen. Die Brücke steht auf 6 (3×2) Pfosten und ermöglicht einen fantastischen Blick auf den kleine darunter fließenden Fluss. Obwohl der Wasserspiegel nur während einer Zeit von 6 Monaten
steigt (Regensaison), setzt diese Brücke ein Zeichen: Bildung ist wichtig und unterstreicht, dass wir genau in das investieren, für alles Schüler einen einfachen und komfortablen Zugang zur Schule, sowohl bei guten wie auch bei schlechten Wetterbedingungen, zu ermöglichen. Nicht nur die Schüler profitieren von der neuen Infrastruktur. Es schafft auch Möglichkeiten einen Schulhof/Campus in naher Zukunft zu bauen. Die Schule ist sehr neu und die erste Schülergeneration wird jetzt im kommenden Juni/Juli an den nationalen Abschlussprüfungen teilnehmen. Wenn sie gute Ergebnisse erlangen, haben sie die Chance auf eine öffentliche Universität zu gehen. Da ist genug Potenzial unter den jungen Schülerin und Schülern.
In etwas mehr als 100 Tagen wird die Brücke als „Barcelona-Brücke“ eröffnet, als eine Erinnerung an unseren Besuch und an die Konversation zwischen Lilongwe und Barcelona. Zum Ende unseres Besuches war die Brücke zu ¾ fertiggestellt. Die übriggebliebene Arbeit
ist auf eine weitere Woche abgeschätzt. 3000€ wurden ausgegeben und wir fügten noch weitere 200€ dazu um den restlichen Zement kaufen zu können. Wenn die Arbeiter fertig sind benötigt der Beton weitere 120 Tage um ganz durch zu trocknen damit er seine volle
Festigkeit hat. Wir hoffen Du erfreust Dich an dem Ergebnis mit dem derzeitigen Zustand und verfolgst geduldig das Endresultat in den kommenden Monaten.

Währenddessen planen wir die nächste Serie von Fotoausstellungen in ganz Europa. Die Fotos werden wieder zum Verkauf stehen, Postkarten werden produziert und ein Katalog, der die ganze Geschichte beschreibt, wird hergestellt. Der Hintergrund ist jedem eine klare
Vorstellung zu vermitteln und einen Moment der Reflexion mit dem Team bestehend aus der Fotografien Marieke Selhorst, dem Partner von 2011, Alexander Eschler und dem Gründer von Malarchi, Guust Selhorst, zu schaffen. Falls Du kostenlosen logistische Unterstützung ermöglichen kannst, kosten freie Räumlichkeiten für Ausstellungen kennst, fühl Dich frei uns zu kontaktieren. Je voudrais, tout d´abord, souligner que Malarchi est un projet soutenu par de nombreuses personnes, et ceci est essentiel. Soyons honêtes, sans vous, rien ne se serait réalisé. Je souhaite également remercier fortement votre soutien pour le  troisieme projet de Malarchi, un pont pour l´école secondaire de Kasupe Ministries. Vous avez ainsi participé a un projet d´architecture à but social et humanitaire, pour lequel nous avons collecté vos donations afin d´acheter des matériaux sur place et de payer les travailleurs locaux.

Nous avons tous relevé nos manches durant ces trois semaines et travaillé sous le soleil brulânt africain pour construire aux étudiants de l´école secondaire un pont (respectant les carectéristiques de développement durable), ainsi ils n´auront plus à traverser des zones boueuses pour aller à l´école. Près de 10m3 de béton ont été mélangés et déversés pour créer cette sculpture de 14m de long et 2m 45 de large. L´équipe l ‘a construit entièrement à la main. L´absence d´électricité et d´eau courante a été vaincue par la pure force humaine.

Le pont est soutenu par 6 (3×2) piliers et offre une merveilleuse vue sur le ruisseau qui passe en dessous. Bien que le niveau de l´eau monte durant une période de 6 mois seulement, le pont permet d´affirmer une position: l´Education est important et nous avons clairement investi dans ce projet pour que tous les étudiants aient un acces facie et confortable à l´école quelques soient les conditions atmosphériques. Ce ne sont pas seulement les étudiants que profiterons de cette nouvelle infrastructure. Il permet de créer des opportunités afin de développer le campus dans un proche futur. L´école est jeune, et pour la première fois des étudiants seront diplômés de la quatrième à la dernière année, afin de participer aux examens nationaux. S´ils obtiennient de bons résultats, ils auront accès aux universités publiques. Il y a beaucoup d´espoir en la jeunesse.

Dans un peu plus de 100 jours, le pont sera inauguré sous le nom de “Barcelona Bridge”, rappelant ainsi notre visite et les conversations entre Lilongwe et Barcelone. Au moment où nous avons laisser la construction , deux tiers de la surface du pont étaient terminés. Nous avons estimé le travail qu´il restait à réaliser à une semaine supplémentaire.3000 euros ont été dépensés et nous avons ajouté 200 euros pour d´acheter plus de ciment , afin de terminer le pont. Une fois ce travail réalisé, le béton a besoin de 120 jours pour durcir, jusqu´à ce qu´il obtienne une résistance suffisante. Nous esperons que vous pourrez d´ores et déja admirer le résultat dans son état actuel et il faudra patienter quelques mois  pour voir le pont terminé.

Pendant ce temps, nous sommes en train de préparer la prochaine séries d´expositions des photos du chantier, en peu partout en Europe, . Les photos seront de nouveau vendues, des cartes postales seront éditées et un catalogue illustrant l´histoire complète, en détail. Notre intention est d´offrir a chacun une image claire des résultats et de créer un moment de réflexion avec la photographe Marieke Selhorst , la partenaire de 2011, Alexander Eschler, et le fondateur de Malarchi, Guust Selhorst. Ceux d´entre vous qui peuvent nous offrir un appui logistique ou bien qui pourrait nous proposer un lieu pour organiser une exposition, gratuitement, sont invités à se mettre en contact avec nous. Eu quero deixar claro que Malarchi é um projecto realizado por muita gente, e este aspecto é essencial. Sejamos honestos, sem você, isto não se teria concretizado. Portanto,  gostaria de expressar a minha absoluta gratidão   por apoiar o terceiro projecto Malarchi , uma ponte para a escola secundária de Kasupe Ministries. Você  participou num projecto social, humanitário e arquitectónico, que colectou os seus donativos para a compra de materiais de construção e para pagar a trabalhadores locais desta obra.

Cada um de nós arregaçou as mangas durante  três semanas e trabalhou árduamente debaixo do sol quente Africano para construir para os alunos da escola secundária, uma ponte sustentável para que eles não tivessem que caminhar pela lama para ir à escola. Quase 10m3 de betão foram misturados e derramados para criar esta escultura de 14m de comprimento e 2m45 de altura. A equipa construiu tudo à mão. A falta de electricidade e água corrente foi vencida pela pura força humana .

A ponte apoia-se em 6 (3×2) pilares e oferece uma vista maravilhosa sobre o pequeno rio que corre por baixo. Embora o nível da água aumente durante um período de apenas seis meses, esta ponte  deixa bem claro: A educação é importante e claramente é necessário investir agora para que todos os estudantes tenham fácil acesso e possam ir confortavelmente para a escola quer seja sob bom ou mau tempo. Não só os alunos vão lucrar com a nova infra-estrutura, isto cria oportunidades para desenvolver o campus num futuro próximo. A escola ainda é jovem, tanto que os alunos só vão completar o quarto ano pela primeira vez este ano, e estão prestes a participar nos exames nacionais. Se obtiverem bons resultados, podem ter acesso às universidades públicas. Há bastante potencial nestes jovens.

Em pouco mais de 100 dias, a ponte será inaugurada como a “Ponte Barcelona”, como uma lembrança à nossa visita e em honra às ligações entre Lilongwe e Barcelona. Quando estavamos prestes a deixar o local de construção para trás, ⅔ da superfície da ponte já estavam concluídos. Para o trabalho restante estimava-se mais uma semana. 3000 € foram gastos e nós juntámos 200 € para comprar cimento, a fim de terminar a ponte. Quando as obras são feitas, o betão precisa endurecer lentamente durante 120 dias para que este atinja a sua força total. Então,  esperamos que você possa desfrutar dos resultados como estão agora e ter alguma paciência para observar a ponte concluída em poucos meses.

Entretanto, estamos a preparar a próxima série de exposições por toda a Europa com as fotos do processo. As imagens estarão à venda novamente, serão produzidos cartões postais e um catálogo que ilustra toda a história em detalhes. A los donantes y simpatizantes,

Quiero dejar en claro que Malarchi es un proyecto llevado a cabo por un montón de gente, y este hecho es esencial. Seamos honestos, sin ti, esto no se haría realidad.Por lo tanto, deseo expresar mi gratitud absoluta al apoyo recibido por la tercera Malarchi proyecto, un puente para la escuela secundaria de Kasupe Ministries. Por la presente, participó en un proyecto social humanitario y arquitectónico, que recogió sus donaciones para comprar materiales y pagar una mano de obra local.

Cada uno de nosotros se remangó las mangas y construyó durante las tres semanas bajo el ardiente sol africano un puente sostenible para los estudiantes de la escuela secundaria, de modo que no tendrían que caminar por el barro para ir a la escuela. Casi 10m3 de hormigón se mezcla y se vierte para crear esta escultura de 14 metros de largo y 2m45. El equipo construyó todo a mano. La falta de electricidad y agua corriente fue superada por la fuerza humana pura.

El puente se encuentra en 6 (3×2) pilares y ofrece una maravillosa vista sobre el pequeño arroyo. Aunque el nivel del agua sube durante un período de sólo seis meses, este puente es una afirmación clara: la educación es importante y por eso invertimos en esto para que todos los estudiantes obtengan un fácil y cómodo acceso a la escuela sin que influyan las circunstancias atmosfétricas. No sólo los estudiantes se beneficiarán de la nueva infraestructura, sino que también se crearán oportunidades para desarrollar el campus en un futuro próximo. La escuela sigue siendo joven, llos estudiantes se graduarán por primera vez del cuarto y último año listos para participar en los exámenes nacionales. Si obtienen buenos resultados pueden obtener acceso a la universidad pública. Hay suficiente potencial entre los jóvenes.

En un poco más de 100 días, el puente se inauguró como el “Puente de Barcelona”, como un recuerdo de nuestra visita y las conversaciones entre Lilongwe y Barcelona. En el momento de abandonar el lugar de la construcción, el ⅔ de la superficie del puente estaba ya terminado. El resto del trabajo se estimó en acabarlo en una semana más.  Se gastaron 3000 € y añadimos 200 €  de cemento para terminar el puente. Cuando la obra se acabó, el hormigón necesitaba endurecer lentamente durante 120 días para obtener su fuerza optima. Así que esperamos que usted esté disfrutando del resultado actual y tenga paciencia para admirar el puente terminado en unos meses.

Actualmente, estamos planificando la ejecución próxima de exposiciones con las imágenes de la construcción del puente Barcelona en toda Europa. Próximamente, Las imágenes estarán a la venta y también se podrán obtener postales y un catálogo que ilustra toda la historia al detalle de todo el proceso. La intención es ofrecer una visión clara y más profunda de los problemas para que llegue a todo el mundo y así poder crear un espacio para la  reflexión con el fotógrafo Selhorst Marieke, el compañero del año 2011, Eschler Alexander y fundador de Malarchi, Guust Selhorst. Aquellos que puedan ofrecer el apoyo logístico e incluso puedan disponer de un lugar para organizar la exposición, de forma gratuita, por favor póngase en contacto con nosotros. Als donants i simpatitzants,

Vull deixar en clar, que Malarchi és un projecte dut a terme per un munt de gent, i aquest fet és essencial. Siguem honestos, sense tu, això no s’hagués fet realitat. Per tant, vull expressar la meva gratitud absoluta al suport rebut, per el tercer projecte de Malarchi. Un pont per l’escola secundària de Kasupe Ministries, per la participació d’un projecte social humanitari i arquitectònic, que va recollir les seves donacions per comprar materials i poder pagar una mà d’obra local.

Cada un de nosaltres es va arremangar i va construir durant tres setmanes, sota l’ardent sol africà un pont sostenible per als estudiants de l’escola secundària, per el fet de que no haguessin d’anar caminant per el fang, per poder arribar a l’escola. Es van utilitzar 10m3 de formigó que van ser abocats, per crear aquesta estructura de 14 metres de llarg i 2m45 d’ample. L’equip ho va construir tot a mà. La manca d’electricitat i aigua corrent va ser superada per la força humana.

El pont es troba a 6 (3×2) pilars i ofereix una meravellosa vista sobre el petit rierol, encara que el nivell de l’aigua puja durant un període de només sis mesos, aquest pont és una afirmació clara: l’educació és important i per això invertim,  perquè tots els estudiants obtinguin un accés fàcil i còmode per arribar a l’escola, sense que influeixin les circumstàncies  meteorològiques. No només els estudiants es beneficiaran de la nova infraestructura, sinó que també es crearan oportunitats per desenvolupar el campus en un futur pròxim. L’escola segueix sent jove, aquells estudiants, es graduaran per primera vegada, del quart i últim any, llestos per participar en els exàmens nacionals. Si obtenen bons resultats poden accedir a la universitat pública. Hi ha suficient potencial entre els joves.

D’aquí més o menys 100 dies, el pont  serà inaugurat, amb el nom “El Pont de Barcelona”, com un record de la nostra estada, i totes les llargues converses mantingudes entre, Lilongwe i Barcelona. A final exposition in Europe is coming up by the end of this month. On the 25th of March in Plano B, las gallerias in Porto we will open the photo exhibition which is a testimony of the last realized project in benefit of the one that’s coming up. We’ll present you the work on the HIV Consulting Center, the people who worked with us, Kasupe Ministries (the local organization) and the natural surroundings. Feel welcome, the entrance is free, the project is clear, transparent and very direct. The obtained money from the sold pictures will be used in May this year to pay local workers and buy materials for a bridge in steel and wood in order to guarantee access to the secondary school of Kasupe Ministries during the rain season.  Feel free to ask any question, contact us on malarchi@secretary.net or leave a comment.

There where some changes in the opening and closing dates because of an error in the delivery of the pictures at the gallery in Berlin. Sorry for the inconvenience. Sadly I will not be able to make it to the inauguration. Work at the office of Manuel de Solà-Morales keeps me in Barcelona.

Great thanks for Alexander Eschler to present the work of last year in Malawi and translate all the descriptions of the pictures in German. A special thanks I want to express to the people in Berlin who support this project in giving free donations or buying a picture. Luis and Raul of Pantocrator Berlin were responsible of the beautiful mise-en-scène and did a great effort to offer us the exposition room for free. So thank you guys to support this work, thank you gallery Pantocrator and all who have given energy to help the people of the Balaka District, in Malawi and this project which tries to investigate the missed opportunity so far of architecture as a great tool to develop area’s as a natural process of human scale and in a sustainable way.

MALARCHI #3 

The Malarchi exhibition – organized each year in different European cities – will confront us with a by OECE recognized developing country within its everyday context. Brought all together it provides us a testimony of a social project, the result of one year previously communication between north and south, designing and search for the acquired funds. Malarchi projects work directly with you as there judges. You decide of this should continue or not, observing during the exposition the result of the last year. This direct judging eliminates a process of paperwork and cost for administration where lots of money is lost or badly spends by traditional NGO’s. With a relatively small budget, but high efficiency and helped by the strong European currency against the local African market, small scale projects are achieved by the locals and with us.

In facts: The theater priced 650 euros, the HIV building 3000 euros and now only 5000 euros for a bridge!!! “How much does your building cost, Mr. Fletcher?” illustrates a real social architecture experiment and gives an appropriate respond on the perception we have in Europe of a real-estate kind of architecture. It shows a social project, in his direct fysical shape as a reaction on the many moralizing charity projects. We don’t need words, we need actions! This no-nonsense compilation leads to short, simple and directly observable actions, as you will be witnessing. The high quality prints in wooden frames will fund our next social project of building a bridge for a secondary school that is inaccessible during the rain season.

From the Balaka District, Malawi, Mr. Fletcher, the director of a local organization asked for an HIV house to build with bricks. The bricks he talked about were handmade by the HIV patients in order to offer them a place on the student campus. Implementing this center in a campus would encourage young people to get tested, and bring the disease out of its taboo. With a sincere design using local building materials, a piece of architecture  is realized which is in its details, shape, skin, implantation, and mixed use, trying to pass the limits of  the available materials as well as responding to cultural practices and local building traditions. It tries to rethink what a roof is; how the sunlight falls; how to ventilate the space; and investigates the relationship inside outside, transparency and intimacy.

Together with Mr. Fletcher we react on the current Malawian architecture, which is a reflection of society as repressed by HIV, poverty, without pride, identity and a false modesty because of the dependency on European and American charity.
